E-book survey – win £200 Amazon vouchers

January 28, 2008

The University Library Service would like to ask for your help by responding to this UK wide JISC survey about e-book usage:

The aim of this survey, certainly the largest of its type yet conducted in the UK, is to explore whether electronic books might offer a solution to improving access to popular course texts. In other words, would you like to see the Library providing direct links to electronic versions of core textbooks?

The survey will take 10-12 minutes to complete, much less if you don’t already use e-books – but we would still greatly value your views. The closing date is midnight on 15th February 2008.

You can enter the survey here. If you leave your university email address at the end of the survey, you will be entered into a prize draw for £200 worth of Amazon vouchers.

You are under no obligation whatsoever to take part in this survey. Any information you give us will be held securely and we will under no circumstances reveal any findings other than at a highly aggregated level. We are collecting the data through a third-party, Survey Monkey, and you can check their privacy policy at here .

If you have any problems or questions, please contact slais-surveys@ucl.ac.uk

New Ovid Service

December 13, 2007

From 4 February 2008 a new and enhanced Ovid healthcare database service only will be available through the Cardiff University Library Service. At the moment both the present and future Ovid are being run together. The new version can be accessed by going to the existing Ovid service and clicking on “Try OvidSP!” at the top of the database menu, (gateway.ovid.com/athens).

The new version has all the current Ovid features plus many more. Users will be able to continue searching as at present by clicking on the “Ovid Syntax” link. Enhanced features of the new service include a basic, natural language search facility, where users can type in their searches in ordinary, everyday English and retrieve relevant journal article references,as well as the ability to create RSS feeds, which provide current awareness updates.

Lunchtime drop-in sessions will be held on the 8,9 and 10 January in the small Duthie Library Teaching Lab between 12-1. The intention will be for ten or fifteen minute brief demonstrations of the new Ovid service so please come at any time between 12-1 on those days.
